From apocalypse to apotheosis—in his Second Symphony, Gustav Mahler explores one of humanity’s great questions: “Why did you live?” His music traverses the light and shadow of existence, brimming with turmoil, sorrow, intimacy, and a down-to-earth zest for life.

Composer Gustav Mahler broke the boundaries of the symphony by integrating folk songs from the cycle *Des Knaben Wunderhorn* and—following the example of Beethoven’s Ninth—a grandiose choral finale. According to Mahler, in this work one would be “struck to the ground with clubs and then lifted to the highest heights on angel’s wings.”

Conducted by Daniel Harding.
