Photographs by Anno Wilms

The exhibition Berlin, du schriller Vogel (Berlin, you flamboyant bird) presents Anno Wilms' unique photographs from the 1970s, which captured some of the most flamboyant and vibrant places in West Berlin.

Her pictures show legendary meeting places of the queer scene, such as the now cult travesty and drag bar Lützower Lampe, or Chez Romy Haag, which established its own unique artistic programme somewhere between nightclub and revue theatre.

Two melting pots with international appeal for celebrities such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Grace Jones, Freddie Mercury, Helmut Newton and Mick Jagger.

The exhibition captures a time when the nightlife of the walled city was characterised by untamed freedom and cultural diversity, or, as composer Gyoergy Ligeti put it: ‘... a surrealistic cage: those who are inside are free.’

  • The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Anno Wilms Foundation.
