Sarastro meets Mielke: BERLIN is not SALZBURG, Berlin's anarchic, inclusive music and theatre festival, will take place from 11-13 July 2025 at the former Stasi headquarters in Lichtenberg (Campus for Democracy).

For three days and nights, music acts and actors from the independent performing arts will present their reworkings of Mozart's Secret Service opera, The Magic Flute, in front of and inside the temples of the former GDR Order of Men.

Volume 5 is explicitly aimed at those who first think of marzipan and nougat sweets when they think of Mozart. Prior knowledge, bank balance and social status play no part in this celebration of the arts.

After the Berlin Anti-Festival 2019-2023 worked its way through Bayreuth and Rock am Ring, among others, it's now time for the chic Salzburg Festival. The approach is unabashedly humorous, and Berlin with its impending ‘Salzburgisation’ is also targeted.

Based on The Magic Flute, BERLIN is not SALZBURG asks: What tests do we have to pass as a society, what contribution can art make to this and how can we counteract the contemplation and musealisation of the art world?
