At the beginning of November 1923, a pogrom broke out in Berlin's Scheunenviertel. For almost two days, Berliners marched through the Scheunenviertel, committing acts of violence against Jewish people in this working-class neighborhood.

This massive outburst of violence, ten years before the Nazis seized power, has virtually disappeared from public historical consciousness. Even the historical traces of the Scheunenviertel are barely existent; only a few stumbling blocks point to its former Eastern European Jewish population.

Therefore, this event on November 2, 2025, aims to prevent it from being forgotten and, in cooperation with the Mitte Museum, organizes a day of remembrance. It will focus not only on the Scheunenviertel pogrom, but also on the lives of the people for whom the Scheunenviertel was their home.

They will discuss the realities and models of life in the Scheunenviertel with historian Anne-Christin Saß, author of "Berliner Luftmenschen: Osteuropäisch-jüdische Migranten in der Weimarer Republik," and aspiring historian Laurids Ponßen, who is working on a study of Grenadierstraße.

Afterwards, participants will embark on a journey through the Scheunenviertel of the 1920s, tracing the places where German Jews encountered Eastern European Jewish migrants.

The focus will be not only on the pogrom and the oppression, but also on the former diversity of theaters, shops, schools, clubs, and synagogues where these people's lives unfolded. Along the way, they will meet the poet Mascha Kaléko, actor Alexander Granach, and many other historical figures of Jewish Berlin in the 1920s.
