Scenic biography with Bach's original music (13+)
The biographical production with a chamber orchestra and choir brings the life and work of this important composer to the stage. The artist portrait shows Bach as a person who has been pursuing his life's dream since childhood with consistency and passion.
Since its premiere in 2005, the production of theatre director Thomas Sutter has been attended by 150 performances of 50,000 spectators until May 2013. After a short break, the big resumption with numerous reshuffles (including the new Bach actor Andreas Goebel) was on the program in January 2014. The emotional production with eleven actors in 138 roles opens up a multifaceted, historical panorama and allows us to immerse ourselves in a world with today's difficult to imagine living conditions. The 13-member chamber orchestra not only performs 35 works by Bach, but is also involved in the stage.
Short version and long version: The short version tells the story of Bach's childhood and youth, the employment of the 19-year-old organist in Arnstadt, the marriage with Maria Barbara and the conflicts with the absolutist power structures in Weimar and Köthen. Musically, Bach's secular works are in the foreground. In the long version, the church works, the art of the fugue and Bach's work as St. Thomas's cantor are also highlighted.
