Interventions and event series in public space
For this year's edition of the art competition "Kunst im Untergrund 2024/25: flexen, shirren, fantasieren – mapping the queer city," artists were invited to propose new works for urban spaces that explore the freedom of movement of different population groups and to submit artistic proposals that reflect current socio-political developments.
Major Western European cities are built to scale and optimally usable for specific audiences. However, our city and its residents are complex and diverse. People have different needs and strategies for using public space.
How do women, people of color (PoC), queer and post-migrant individuals, workers, children, retirees, and people with disabilities experience and shape their city? How do they adapt to structures and architecture that were not designed for them?
The selected works will be on display from June to September 2025, both above and below ground, at the Nollendorfplatz, Bülowstraße, and Schönhauser Allee subway stations along the U2 line.
For this year's edition of Art in the Underground, an online magazine has been published for the first time, bringing together diverse perspectives and a multifaceted exploration of the urban space.
The magazine brings together new and existing texts, video, and audio works and invites artists, authors, and activists to contribute their perspectives throughout the project. In addition to artistic contributions, historical and sociopolitical analyses will also be published, underscoring the intersectional nature of the project.
The magazine's content combines historical perspectives from East and West Berlin with current issues—particularly in the context of the three subway stations along the U2 line, which was interrupted during the division of Berlin.
