"All drawing is useful, and so is drawing everything!" (A. Menzel)
A centerpiece of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) is its precious collection of drawings. The lectures will present major works of this art form, which is on a par with painting, including delicate silverpoint drawings, Botticelli's illustrations of Dante, watercolors by Dürer and Merian, and even Menzel's oil sketches.

The various functions of the drawings, from spontaneous sketches to independent works of art, will also be highlighted. Dürer already knew that drawing is the most spontaneous means of expression for artists.
