The Deutschlandmuseum on Leipziger Platz is an interactive experience museum. In 60 minutes, you’ll journey through 2,000 years of German history across 1,400 square metres.

At the new Deutschlandmuseum, there’s one thing you should do: listen, look, feel and, yes, even smell. Wander through the Germanic primeval forest amongst trees that look deceptively real; a few minutes later, experience chivalrous shadow plays behind stained-glass windows in a medieval castle. One moment you’ve been breathing in the smell of gunpowder, and the next – a few centuries later – you’re standing in a 1950s ‘Economic Miracle’ flat, listening to Schlager music .

German history in a nutshell: the one-hour journey through time at the Deutschlandmuseum takes you through twelve eras. You’ll wander through a variety of distinct, high-quality and imaginatively designed themed worlds that combine experiences – the sort you might find in a theme park – with German history.

Feel free to bring the whole family, especially children: no prior knowledge of history is required to embark on this journey through time. It presents vivid historical scenes, explained and brought to life through 3D animations, original and live-action films, as well as a number of exhibits such as a cavalry helmet from the Thirty Years’ War. All accompanied by sound effects from a total of 100 speakers.

You can learn in a playful way at interactive stations: where do Germany’s national colours actually come from, and what was the German Confederation? But you can also become a criminologist and try to solve the famous heroin theft of 1926 .

A journey through time across 12 eras

Chronologically, the journey takes you from Roman-Germanic antiquity through the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment and the founding of the German Empire, on to the German Empire, the World Wars and finally the last major historical event in Germany: reunification. Travel through...

It’s certainly not dry or boring: you can click your way through compositions by medieval minstrels or try your hand at a printing press of the sort developed during the Reformation. And there’s plenty of room for a laugh too: take a seat on a medieval latrine (even a peek inside the ‘outhouse’ is a surprise) and take a selfie!

You can easily reach the Deutschlandmuseum by taking Underground line 2 ( ) and S-Bahn lines 1, 2, 25 and 26, getting off at the Potsdamer Platz S-Bahn and Underground station. Alternatively, you can take bus routes 200, 300, M41 or M48 to the Leipziger Straße bus stop.

Nearby attractions

You are in Berlin’s new cultural centre . Right next to the Deutschlandmuseum is the German Spy Museum. From Leipziger Platz, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to Potsdamer Platz. Take your children to Legoland and the Deutsche Kinemathek there. From here, you can also quickly reach the Kulturforum, home to the world-famous Neue Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie, which showcase the works of the most famous Old Masters: from Dürer to Botticelli, Rembrandt to Rubens, Titian to Caravaggio.
