The musical to mark the 120th anniversary of the Köpenickiade

To mark the anniversary, Köpenick Town Hall is staging a chamber musical by Heiko Stang, loosely based on the autobiography of Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt.

The Captain of Köpenick – Wilhelm Voigt, a cobbler disguised as a Prussian captain, occupied Köpenick Town Hall on 16 October 1906, arrested the mayor and seized the town’s treasury. He was subsequently sentenced to four years in prison.

Voigt, who really only wanted to force the authorities to grant him a passport so he could lead an honourable life, met with great public sympathy for his stunt. As even Emperor Wilhelm II was highly amused by the ingenious coup, which brought the Prussian authorities into disrepute, he granted Voigt a early pardon after almost two years in prison. On 15 August 1908, he was released very early from Tegel Prison to prevent a large crowd from gathering.

Standing alone with his suitcase outside the gates of Tegel, he reflects on his success and lets the story play out once more in his mind.

Starring Maximilian Nowka as Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt and Andreas Peschel as the pianist at the grand piano.
