Catalan Modernism around 1900
In the late 19th century, Catalan Modernism emerged in Barcelona as an extraordinary artistic movement that extended far beyond the visual arts and also shaped architecture, music, and literature. For the first time in Germany, an exhibition is devoted comprehensively to this topic, focusing on the vibrant metropolis and its cultural landscape between approximately 1880 and 1914.

From Gaudí and Picasso to lesser-known figures
In addition to internationally renowned artists such as Antoni Gaudí and Pablo Picasso, the exhibition also features figures of Catalan Modernism who are less well-known in this country. These include Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Isidre Nonell, Joaquim Mir, and Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa.
In their search for their own artistic identity, they drew on a wide range of influences: the Catalan Middle Ages and the Spanish Old Masters served as sources of inspiration, as did the Parisian avant-garde and European Art Nouveau. The sociopolitical tensions of Barcelona also found their way into their works. The landscapes of Mallorca provided a contrast to life in the modern metropolis, appearing as a paradisiacal alternative.
International Loans
On view are works on loan from major public and private collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the Círculo del Liceo in Barcelona, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, and the Colección Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza.
