Created under the direction of Berlin-based director Shayna Swanson in collaboration with Aloft Circus Arts, “The Pieces” is a visually stunning new contemporary performance that combines partner acrobatics, movement, and original music with eight custom-built metal structures that are constantly assembled, disassembled, balanced, and reconfigured throughout the performance.
As the structures evolve, so do the relationships between the performers.
What begins as a collection of individual parts gradually becomes a reflection on trust, interdependence, resilience, and the complex balance between individual freedom and collective strength.
"The Pieces" was developed over several years through international residencies and artistic collaborations and brings together six international performers from Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Following the preview performance in Berlin, the production will travel directly to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where the official world premiere will take place.
The performances in Berlin were made possible with support from the Pankow district’s KiA program, which promotes accessible, high-quality cultural experiences for children, young people, and families.
“Berlin was the creative home of this project,” says director Shayna Swanson. “Before presenting it to an international audience in Edinburgh, it was important to us to first introduce it to the community where it was created.”
The production features original music by composer Meni Gross, based on recordings of the metal structures themselves, making the physical architecture of the performance part of its musical landscape.
