Adventures from the South Seas to the Bobsled Track

Before or after the workshops, Berlin’s youngest visitors in particular can look forward to the city’s most extraordinary play areas. All playgrounds in the Gardens of the World are inspired by Erich Kästner’s children’s novel *The 35th of May*. In this book, Konrad sets off on an adventurous journey to the South Seas with his uncle and the talking circus horse Negro Kaballo. A particular summer highlight is the water playground “Konrad’s Journey to the South Seas,” featuring a giant climbing whale, a giant hammock, a water forest, a trampoline, and South Sea huts near the main entrance and visitor center. Opposite the Japanese Garden, the “Konrad in the Flower Treetops” playground spans an area of 800 square meters. Here, adventurous children of various ages can enjoy a climbing course consisting of 13 large floating platforms ranging in height from 40 cm to 2.20 m. There are also oversized colorful flowers, a balance course, a rope slalom, and a tunnel slide for kids to let off steam. If that’s not enough, kids can continue playing right next door in neighboring Kienberg Park, near the cable car station and the Wolkenhain, among the “Polynesian Giant Ants” and in the futuristic “Elektropolis,” which Konrad encounters during his journey.

The LEITNER Nature Bobsled Track in Kienbergpark also promises fast-paced action: During the nearly 500-meter-long descent, young amateur pilots zoom through the park’s landscape at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. The Nature Bobsled Track is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ticket office closes at 5 p.m.). Tickets are available on-site: 6.50 euros or 5 euros (reduced rate). Children ages 3 through 5 ride for free. Children ages 8 and older who are at least 1.35 meters tall may ride the bobsleds alone; children ages 3 through 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
