Gulnur Mukazhanova

Gulnur Mukazhanova’s exhibition is conceived as a contemporary intervention in the historic space of the Kunsthaus Dahlem.

In addition to selected earlier works, the artist responds to the building’s monumental architecture—whose history has been shaped by ideological attributions as well as political upheavals—with a large-scale new installation made of soft, body-hugging textile materials.

Mukazhanova’s body of work encompasses textile pieces, photographs, and installation-based formats. It emerges from the tension between globalized realities of life and traditional ways of life, reflecting personal experiences as well as social and political processes.

At the heart of her work is the connection between Central Asian traditions and approaches from conceptual art and abstraction. Questions of identity, migration, and cultural change appear as recurring themes in her work.

Gulnur Mukazhanova was born in Semipalatinsk in 1984 and is now one of Kazakhstan’s best-known artists. She studied textile design at the Academy of Arts in Almaty and at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. Since her participation in the Central Asian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, she has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally.

Concurrently with her exhibition at the Kunsthaus Dahlem, she is also featured at this year’s Kyiv Biennial at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.
