Music and Equality in the Nordic Countries
The Nordic countries are regarded worldwide as role models for equality. But how equal is the music industry there really?
Why do female musicians and gender minority artists still earn less, appear less frequently on major festival stages, and remain underrepresented in key industry positions?
The exhibition “The Sound of Courage” takes these questions as its starting point and tells the stories of artists who had the courage to shed light on injustices and drive change.
Spurred by the #MeToo movement and recent debates about sexism in the music industry, the exhibition shines a light on the voices that have turned silence into public discourse.
Through images, video, and audio material, as well as portraits of artists and projects, the exhibition powerfully demonstrates how music can become an instrument of social change.
It brings together projects and artists from all five Nordic countries and their autonomous regions—Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Åland.
A joint production of the Nordic embassies in Berlin, supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
