The Spandau Citadel is truly something special. Built between 1557 and 1594 by, among others, the Italian architect Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and the Italian military engineer Count Rochus Guerini zu Lynar, the citadel remained in military use until 1945.

Join the team on a journey through the history of the fortress’s construction, Napoleon Bonaparte’s visit, the events of the Wars of Liberation, and the storage of the Imperial War Treasury between 1874 and 1919.

The citadel’s casemates form one of Europe’s largest winter habitats for bats. For this reason, they are open to visitors only three months a year. The vaulted passages with their thick walls were originally built for defensive purposes. During a tour of the casemates of the König Bastion, you will not only explore one of the oldest areas of the citadel, which has been largely preserved in its original condition, but also a location of cinematic interest—among other things, Edgar Wallace’s *The Sorcerer* was filmed here in 1964.

In cooperation with the Heimatkundliche Vereinigung Spandau 1954 e. V., the tour will be led by Manfred Schulze, Hans Dambietz, or Sebastian Gramigna.
