The “Infinite Exhibition” now comprises 22 works of art from the Hamburger Bahnhof collection, displayed both inside and outside the museum. A microsite and booklet guide visitors through the museum, the garden, and adjacent areas, connecting the collection, history, building, and neighborhood.

The tour includes Dan Flavin’s light installation (1996), historic sites such as the former Invalidenstraße border crossing, Christian Boltanski’s “The Missing House” on Große Hamburger Straße (1990), as well as annual commissioned works by Berlin-based artists Judith Hopf (2023) and Claudia Wieser (2024). Susan Philipsz’s sound installation will open during the Open House (June 13–15, 2025).

Each year, the exhibition is expanded with a new production, which is permanently acquired for the Nationalgalerie’s collection. Since all works to date have been created by male artists, female artists were invited to participate between 2023 and 2025. The installations “Vinegar Tree Branches Resembling a Cherry Tree” and “Rain” by Berlin-based artist Judith Hopf from 2023 explore the energies and resistances of nature that lie beyond human influence and can be seen in the passageway to the East Wing. Since June 2024, a tiled work by Berlin-based artist Claudia Wieser has been on display on the round elevator shaft at the entrance to the restaurant. Scottish sound artist Susan Philipsz developed a new sound installation for the “Infinite Exhibition” in the courtyard of the Hamburger Bahnhof, in which she engages with the site and its history.
