Today we know: The Sun is just an ordinary star among hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way. Increasingly powerful telescopes and space probes have shown that our solar system, too, is just one of countless planetary systems in the galaxy.
What is needed for life to emerge on these worlds, and what might it look like? Since the dawn of humanity, we have been preoccupied with the question: Are we alone in the universe?
