A workshop on soil—often overlooked, yet the foundation of human life.
We walk on it, build our homes on it, and use it for agriculture and forestry—in short: we live on and from it. We are, of course, talking about soil. Without it, there would be no human life as we know it. At the same time, soil also serves as an indispensable habitat for animals and plants.

The diversity of soil types is impressive and encompasses numerous variations and transitional forms. There are young and old soils, some only a few centimeters thick, others several meters deep. Their development is a complex interplay of rock, water, air, and living organisms, and they are among the most complex ecosystems on Earth.
A handful of healthy soil contains more organisms than there are people in the world!
Yet soil cannot be reproduced, and environmental pollution, soil sealing, and improper management are increasingly taking their toll on it.
In our workshop, we will explore these topics by collecting soil samples in Spreepark, examining them under a stereomicroscope, observing and identifying the hidden soil life within, conducting experiments, and gaining a clear understanding of how soils form.
