In keeping with this year’s theme, “The Power of Women,” the Theater im Palais Berlin’s new in-house theatrical and musical production explores a dark chapter in history: the witch hunts.

In Bernau near Berlin, a wave of persecution began in 1617, during which many innocent people—primarily women—were accused of witchcraft.

One of these women is 70-year-old Dorothea Meermann from Bernau. A third-generation resident, she is arrested for witchcraft and repeatedly tortured over a period of two years.

Nevertheless, she stood up to the power structures of the early modern era and maintained until her death that she was not a witch.

Through intensive historical research and based on true stories, an era is brought to life that, only at first glance, seems to have nothing to do with our modern times.

Alina Gause and Carl Martin Spengler immerse themselves in a story—sometimes through play, sometimes through storytelling—where narratives carry more weight than facts and the powerful are always right.
