Guided tour to the historic commandery of the Knights Templar in the setting of the Old Park in Tempelhof

"It is not fitting for a Templar to ask God to protect him from hardship and danger; but we may certainly implore the Almighty..." - From the novel "The Templars of Tempelhof" by the Berlin local historian and theologian Oskar Schwebel, 1888.

The story of the legendary Knights Templar continues to fascinate people to this day. Around the year 1200, the Templar Knights settled south of the twin cities of Cölln and Berlin. The secretive community of the Templars also left its mark on Berlin. For example, Tempelhof got its name from the Templars. Outwardly, the Order's activities in the area around Cölln and Berlin during the Middle Ages were characterized by securing trade routes and practicing agriculture.

The guided tour showcases the former Templar estate, located in the romantic Tempelhof city park, "Alter Park". Despite later alterations, its original structure is still clearly recognizable, unlike in the past, but now situated right in the heart of the city. Alongside the historic buildings, the tour provides an informative overview of the Templars' role in the Middle Ages and their significance in the Berlin area. The Templar Order's influence on the local urban culture is another key aspect of the tour.

The Ascanian Margraves of Brandenburg gifted the Knights Templar the land on which they established their Templar court. This led to the founding of the town of Tempelhof. The Order also established other villages, such as Mariendorf and Marienfelde. The Templars and their history continue to be portrayed in literature about the Berlin area, as seen in the aforementioned novel by Oskar Schwebel. In modern urban culture, their tradition is preserved in the official coat of arms of Tempelhof, which still features the ancient Templar cross.

The somewhat hidden theme of this guided tour is a true "insider tip" for those who venture beyond the main tourist attractions and explore the city's cultural landscape.
