Additional information
From the “most eccentric minds in architecture,” whom Wagner, then the city councilor for construction, brought together in 1930, to the “Berlin Reconstruction Program of 1960.”
From the progressive buildings in the Berlin Modernist style—now a World Heritage Site—to Scharoun’s concept of farmsteads.
In addition to Hans Scharoun, Wagner was able to convince Walter Gropius and Otto Bartning, among others, to bring their latest ideas in housing development to the table. Thirty years later, Scharoun built an equally progressive “city” for the GSW in northern Charlottenburg.
All under the motto “Light, air, and sun for everyone.”
What were the motivations? What makes these housing estates so special?
