Helga Goetze

In 1983, the feminist magazine COURAGE wrote: “At first glance, getting close to Helga Goetze seems impossible,” yet they printed an interview with her, portraying “an elderly woman standing on the street at the Gedächtniskirche, well-articulated and screaming ‘fuck’ at everyone passing by.”

At the age of 61, she established herself as an “unavoidable disruptive factor” in West Berlin of the 1980s through her provocative actions. With her almost daily vigils at Breitscheidplatz, she spread messages of her sexual liberation through embroidery, drawings and poems. To this day, the artist and activist defies simple categorization.

The irritations and uncertainties that Helga Goetze triggered on the streets form the starting point for the exhibition: What artistic and political scope do these feelings of disruption provoke?
