Artist Talk: Aline Baiana

The film shown as part of the exhibition challenges the promises of modernisation and traces the social, ecological and cultural consequences of resource extraction. Drawing on a combination of personal accounts, collective memory and ecological historiography, Baiana asks how notions of progress determine whose lives, landscapes and knowledge are valued. The discussion explores filmmaking as a practice of listening and preservation, and poses the question: how can art preserve memories threatened with disappearance whilst simultaneously developing forms of care for damaged ecosystems and the communities associated with them?
