With Neco Çelik, Abuzer Güler, Claudia Hummel and Mehrangis Montazami-Dabui

Building on the exhibition *Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960*, the discussion series *Growing Up in Kreuzberg* brings together artists and contemporary witnesses. The focus is on the political and artistic practices of self-determination that shaped Kreuzberg and West Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s.

The presence of migrant children on the streets of Kreuzberg was already influencing artists’ perspectives on the neighbourhood as early as the 1970s. Works with titles such as *Sanierungsspielplatz* (1974), *Analphabeten in zwei Sprachen* (1975) and *Kinderwünsche* (1979) addressed the difficult circumstances faced by children who were not catered for within the system of so-called ‘guest labour’.

The discussion will explore how childhood and youth in Kreuzberg are artistically portrayed, as well as the emergence of youth initiatives that played a formative role in the development of new artistic forms of expression.
