“No city has less local pride than Berlin,” Heinrich Heine declared in 1830. Well, that was a long time ago. And today? The poet would be way off the mark.

Many Berliners hardly ever venture out of their neighborhood. Their thing is the lively, colorful life just around the corner. Nor are they by any means a “daring breed of people, among whom you need to be tough as nails just to stay afloat,” as Goethe once put it.

No, the true neighborhood insider may usually stand obediently in line at the bakery, but has absolutely no qualms about going to an outdoor café or shopping—especially since their dialect generally creates the closest possible connection while maintaining maximum distance. Try beating that! During this evening of music and cabaret, it will become crystal clear whether you want to stay in your familiar neighborhood or would rather escape to the surrounding areas of the Mark.

And visitors on a sightseeing tour will also learn plenty that isn’t in any guidebook. “There are few artists who can embody a true Berlin original so convincingly,” writes the *Tagesspiegel* about “Chanson-Nette” Jeannette Urzendowsky. She is accompanied and supported by Tal Balshai. Tal has been living in Berlin for a good 30 years—so it goes without saying that he, too, has a wealth of neighborhood experience. Who, exactly, is a Berliner? “Anyone who can put up with us for at least five years is a Berliner,” says Chanson-Nette. And for those who don’t understand her Kodderschnauze, she’s happy to try speaking in Standard German! See you later!
