Jeannette Urzendowsky, also known as Chanson-Nette—whom you’ve already had the pleasure of seeing on our stage in “Ich hätt’ getanzt heut Nacht” and “Warum nur hold und schön und rein…?”—is a true “Berlin native” from the Friedrichshain neighborhood.
Accompanied by Tal Balshai on piano, she takes the audience back to the time when Claire Waldoff became a legend.
Even in the late imperial era, “Waldoff” was an icon of the unconventional; “Get the men out of the Reichstag!” she belted out in the mid-1920s. Earlier than many others, she sang about feminism and free love, and was regarded as a rebel, a cabaret queen, and a Berlin brat—even though she was originally from Gelsenkirchen.
Experience chansons such as “Ach Jott, wat sind die Männer dumm!”, “Die Großstadtpflanze,” and “Das Dornröschen vom Wedding,” complemented by stories from Claire Waldoff’s life, which was fundamentally altered by the rise of National Socialism. A tribute to Claire Waldoff that is also an evening dedicated to ensuring we never forget.
Featuring: Jeannette Urzendowsky, alias Chanson-Nette (acting, vocals), and Tal Balshai (piano) Duration: approx. 1 hr 50 min. (including an intermission after approx. 50 min.)
