15th-Century Chansons and Instrumental Music by Guillaume Dufay
In his songs, Dufay explores all the themes that life has to offer. Naturally, he sings of love in all its facets—the joys and sorrows of love. Other themes in his outstanding artistry include Marian songs and hymns of praise for ecclesiastical and secular rulers. The program is rounded out by Dufay’s New Year’s and spring songs, as well as instrumental dance music.
With vocals, flutes, shawm, pommer, and slide trumpet, the Alta Musica ensemble takes its audience on a musical journey to the late Middle Ages—a journey that is at once lively, dance-like, and virtuosic, as well as meditative. The program features musical arrangements for both a stately wind ensemble and a delicate chamber music ensemble comprising vocals, flutes, string tambourine, and symphonia.
Ensemble Alta Musica
- Rainer Böhm – shawm, recorders / conductor
- Miriam Fahnert – soprano, string tambourine
- Antonia Biemer – soprano, symphonia
- Dagmar Jaenicke – pommer, recorders
Alta Musica is an ensemble dedicated to the research and performance of medieval music. Through vocal performance and the use of period instruments—including flutes, symphonia, string tambourine, portative organ, and percussion instruments—the ensemble interprets and enriches medieval works to appropriately represent all genres of medieval music and their sonic diversity.
A particular focus—which gives the ensemble its name—is on music for the historical wind instruments shawm, pommer, and slide trumpet, known as the Alta Capella, through which the ensemble has earned an internationally renowned reputation.
Participation in international early music festivals, as well as CD, radio, and television recordings, has taken the musicians of the Alta Musica ensemble—founded by Rainer Böhm—all across Europe.
