Two works from the final phase of their composers’ lives, presented as part of the Zeichen & Wunder Biennale, explore what an ending might sound like—and what follows it. Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s “Stille und Umkehr” was composed in 1970, four months before his suicide.

This short orchestral work is sparse in style and, in addition to the usual string and wind sections, features the dulcimer, accordion, and singing saw. At its heart is a single note: “D.” Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony begins precisely with this “D.” He did not complete the finale; an Adagio lasting about half an hour is the last complete movement he left behind.
