What does democracy sound like? The Neue Kammerchor Berlin explores this question in an extraordinary concert project—and invites the audience to become part of the answer on June 27 and 28, 2026.

At the Zionskirche Berlin, a venue with a rich democratic history, a concert experience is taking shape that goes far beyond traditional listening: The audience actively participates, makes decisions, and influences the course of the evening.

Interactive elements, a participatory program booklet, and musical experiments invite attendees not only to reflect on democratic processes but to experience them firsthand. Special moments arise when the usual order is deliberately disrupted: During one piece, for example, someone from the audience or the choir will have the opportunity to take over the musical direction of the concert in place of Adrian Emans.

The repertoire includes works by Brahms, Britten, Mealor, and Plakidis, which explore democracy, community, memory, and the tension between individuality and cohesion in various ways.

“Democracy – A Polyphonic Sound” is a concert that combines musical quality with social relevance, demonstrating above all that democracy thrives on participation.

This project is supported by the Berlin Choral Association.
