Music in Times of War: Debussy & Komitas
The Armenian Gurdjieff Ensemble, last seen at the Pierre Boulez Saal in 2024, and pianist Kirill Gerstein present a musical double portrait of two composers who admired one another and were deeply shaken by the violent events of their time.
Claude Debussy wrote his most modern music in the midst of World War I. Komitas Vardapet (1869–1935), a pioneer of Armenian classical music and ethnomusicology, suffered throughout his life from the trauma of the Armenian Genocide. In the Pierre Boulez Saal, unexpected connections between the two artists become audible.
