A recital featuring Frederico Spina (tenor) and Joon Oh Kim (piano).

La bonne chanson – the good song, the simple song: Gabriel Fauré’s 1892 song cycle, based on Paul Verlaine’s series of poems of the same name.

Fauré needed a supple text that yielded to the music and offered no resistance. He aimed for the general mood of a poem rather than its details. In Verlaine’s poetry, he found a kinship that inspired him to radicalize his aesthetic.

Also on the program:

Cinq mélodies de Venise; Claire de Lune, Op. 46, No. 2; Nocturne No. 1 in E-flat minor, Op. 33; Spleen, Op. 5, No. 3; Prison, Op. 83, No. 1; and Barcarolle No. 1 in A minor, Op. 26
