When Agnes Obel sings, the world seems to stand still for a moment. With her distinctive blend of folk, neoclassical, and pop, this exceptional Danish artist creates unique soundscapes that are at once delicate, haunting, and overwhelming—and has been captivating a steadily growing global audience for years.
Born in Copenhagen in 1980, Obel grew up in a home where music was ever-present: her mother played Chopin for her, and her father collected rare instruments. No wonder, then, that she took up the piano at an early age. Inspired by the Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson, she began writing her own pieces as a teenager and formed her first folk bands. After moving to Berlin, she also discovered a passion for producing and released her debut album “Philharmonics” in 2010, which immediately reached number one on the charts in Denmark and was certified platinum multiple times. By the time “Aventine” (2013) and the more experimental “Citizens of Glass” (2016) were released, she had established herself as one of Europe’s most exciting artists. “Myopia” followed in 2020, released on the legendary Deutsche Grammophon label—an atmospheric work that blends the clarity of chamber music with electronic sound design.
But nothing compares to the intensity of her live performances: Agnes Obel transforms every concert hall into a floating space of light, tension, and delicate melodies. Her voice—elegant, nuanced, and touchingly intimate—takes the audience on a poetic journey through her characteristically dreamy world. Following acclaimed performances this fall, including at Hamburg’s renowned Elbphilharmonie, she is now returning to German stages. Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, and Bonn can look forward to four extraordinary shows full of intensity, subtle magic, and a passion for musical detail.
