A DEFA production in West Berlin: For original footage, a GDR film crew was even allowed to travel to the “class enemy” in the Märkisches Viertel—and turned it into a stage for criticizing capitalism.

The portrayal of West Berlin poverty and class justice—which today seems bizarre and at times amusing—as reflected in the distorted mirror of SED propaganda serves not only as historically educational entertainment but also as a starting point for discussion about prejudices and the portrayal of the Märkisches Viertel in relation to the lived experiences of its residents.

  • Welcome: Sandra Sapiatz, Director of the STZ at the Ribbeck-Haus
  • Introduction: Elena Demke, historian at the Berlin Commissioner for Coming to Terms with the Past (BAB)

Free admission, no registration required.

This event is part of the event series "My Neighborhood: Stories of Divided Berlin" organized by the BAB (Berlin Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship).
