Symposium

Fueled by the rise of right-wing conservatism and by online platforms that have proven to be an ideal breeding ground for misogynistic ideologies, a “masculinist identity politics” (Birgit Sauer) is gaining momentum.

The TEXTE ZUR KUNST issue “Misogyny” builds on earlier thematic issues on gender-specific oppression such as “Feminisms” (1993), “Sexisms” (1994), and “The Feminist” (2022), to explore the media-specific and sociopolitical characteristics of the current climate of misogynistic tendencies and tropes.

The symposium on May 9 centers on the question of how the misogynistic backlash manifests itself in the art world. Anti-feminist modes of representation and methods of art history are examined, as is the challenge of responding to changing conditions today with artistic-feminist strategies. Projections onto and expectations of the female body serve as the basis for analyzing the material and media conditions of feminist criticism.

  • With Catherine McCormack, Kaity Fox, Keta Gavasheli, Alison M. Gingeras, Susanne Huber, Lucy McKenzie, Talia Kwartler, Christian Liclair, Tala Madani, Nicole Wermers, and others.

A project of the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and TEXTE ZUR KUNST.
