Memorial concert to mark the 50th anniversary of Paul Robeson’s death

Fifty years ago, Paul Robeson (1898–1976), the American singer, actor, and civil rights activist, passed away.

To mark this occasion, the Paul Robeson Choir will hold a memorial concert on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kulturraum Zwingli-Kirche in Berlin-Friedrichshain.

The choir will perform, among other pieces, spirituals that Paul Robeson himself sang. These songs evoke the plight of Black slaves in the Southern states, their hope for freedom, and a better future in the Northern United States. Paul Robeson’s struggle for a peaceful and equitable coexistence among all people is just as necessary today as it was during his lifetime. That is why the Paul Robeson Choir’s concert bridges the gap between the past and the present. Joachim Kuipers serves as musical director.

  • Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
  • Address: Zwingli Church, Rudolfstraße 14, 10245 Berlin
