Exhibition | Installation

For just three weekends, an old movie theater complex is dreaming up a new, immersive artistic experience. Memories of an old movie theater often don’t start with scenes from films. Instead, they begin with smells and that very specific gut feeling you get as a child when pushing open heavy doors.

Inside—the air warm and a little dusty. A mix of popcorn, old carpet, and that indefinable smell of projector heat. It smelled like stories, even if you wouldn’t have called it that back then—that’s just what the cinema smells like.

You sat there in those magnificent seats with upholstery that was a bit too soft, your knees perhaps a bit too close to the seat in front, and waited. That waiting was a feeling all its own…and then the lights slowly dimmed.

You sat there feeling both small and incredibly awake. This memory isn’t just a memory. It’s physical. Everyone knows it.

And yet hardly anyone has ever seen most of this movie theater building.

There is another world behind the auditoriums. Behind them, something like a second architecture begins. Hidden service corridors. A labyrinth of tunnels and dark chambers. An entire system of corridors connecting the auditoriums.

The cinema was never just a place for movies. It was always a building with an interior. Like a giant concrete anthill. And that is exactly where the exhibition THE DARK ROOMS VEINS begins—in the hidden layers of the cinema.

In this darkness, 10 international light and sound artists are building their installations.

An old cinema is always a promise that, for a few hours, anything is possible. That the world becomes bigger as soon as the lights go out.

And that somewhere in this building, a little bit of magic is still waiting.
