In 2013, Julia Cummings joined the band Sunflower Bean as a bassist, completing the duo of Olive Faber and Nick Kivlen. Their debut album “Human Ceremony” (2016) was followed by the albums “Twentytwo in Blue” (2018), “Headful of Sugar” (2022), and “Mortal Primetime” (2025), on which the band established a sound blending indie, glam, and psychedelic rock.
As early as 2023, Julia Cumming devoted herself to her solo project, which began with a move to Los Angeles. There, she embarked on a two-year, deeply healing collaboration with producer Brian Robert Jones, which Cumming retrospectively describes as a “second artistic adolescence.” Influenced by artists such as Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Brian Wilson, her album—which she financed entirely on her own—took shape.
With the release of this work, Julia Cumming opens a creative door that has been in the making for years. It culminates the experiences of two decades with bands, releases, labels, and tireless touring.
“Julia” begins with a no-nonsense declaration of independence: her voice and minimalist piano accompaniment unite in a liberating self-affirmation that clearly rejects doubt, misogyny, and the feeling of “being too much.” With a top-notch lineup of musicians and Chris Coady as producer, the result is a joyful, anti-cool coming-out.
“Julia”—a tribute to all nerds, all outsiders, and the undeniable truth that you’re good enough just the way you are.
