The pop-up exhibition “Mastering Type” at the Kulturforum presents a selection of outstanding typeface designs from international master’s programs over the past ten years.
Since 2016, approximately 350 new typefaces have been created in these master’s programs, which were presented on individual posters. The exhibition features a large selection from the past nine years and works from 2026.
Admission is free.
The presentation is complemented by so-called Process Books, which offer insights into the conceptualization, design, and creative processes.
For two days, the exhibition hall will be transformed into a walk-in, three-dimensional typographic space.
As part of the exhibition, a series of lectures and workshops will take place on April 25, 2026.
Type Design Today
The Type Design program—that is, the design of typefaces—is a unique course of study. Renowned institutions for this field include TypeMedia The Hague (NL), Écal Lausanne (CH), Nancy (FR), Amiens (FR), Buenos Aires (AR), Reading (UK), and TypeParis (FR). For final projects, the designed typefaces are presented in the format of a 60 x 124 cm poster, along with a process book documenting the concept, ideas, and work steps. The title “Mastering Type” alludes to the degree’s status—a specialized Master’s in Graphic Design—while also referring to the mastery of typeface design.
Mastering Type
“Mastering Type” is a series of exhibitions and events that presents new typeface designs from international master’s programs in type design. It is organized by Lucas de Groot, graphic designer and lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, in collaboration with Typostammtisch Berlin. In 2026, the series will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a special presentation at the Kulturforum.
A special exhibition by the Art Library – State Museums of Berlin
