The people behind the puppets

The podcast by Roscha A. Säidow and Paula Engel is entering its third season!

Puppet theater? Figure theater? Object theater? Material theater? The Theater of Things?

HÄNDE HOCH! follows the life paths and detours of people on their journey to puppetry. Because not everything that contains a puppet was labeled as such from the start. Many exciting guests from the world of contemporary puppetry will be on hand to answer questions.

Experienced performers, students, theater directors, puppet builders, ensembles, and collectives discuss their unique journeys with this exciting and versatile art form.

The People Behind the Puppets—the third season of “Hände Hoch” focuses this time on networks, and even on a Europe-wide scale! They’ll visit partner universities in the Puppet Partners International (PPI) network project, meet a multinational collective, and explore independent venues and state-run puppet theaters to discover artists in the scene who specialize in puppet and figure theater.

What inspires them, what are they working on, and when exactly did puppetry become a part of their lives?

A production by Roscha A. Säidow and Paula Engel (starting in April 2026).

With the kind support of the Department of Contemporary Puppetry at the HfS Ernst Busch Berlin and the KompleXX Figurentheater.
