Pop-up islands transform the Schlüter Courtyard into a colourful landscape in the summer. The Italian pop-up architecture group Parasite 2.0 have created islands that are open to visitors to access. These islands are places to relax and chat, but they can also become an interactive stage for artistic activities.

Resembling stage sets, the wooden elements stand for the constant ongoing development of the Humboldt Forum. In a central, public space at the very heart of the Forum and in the midst of the city, the islands aim to symbolise how Berlin’s society can play a part in this process of development.
The starting point for the concept developed by the young architects was the premise that, even after the Humboldt Forum had ceased to be a building site and become a cultural institution, the Forum remains “under construction”. Now it is the turn of the contents, goals and cultural function of the Forum to be transformed.
Parasite 2.0 are Stefano Colombo, Eugenio Cosentino and Luca Marullo, who work between Milan and London. Since their formation in 2010 they have considered their shared working practice to be an independent research unit which offers scope for expression in parallel to the spheres of academia or professional activity. They investigate the status of human habitats, acting within a hybrid of architecture, design, and scenography.

Parasite 2.0 has worked and collaborated with Triennale Milano, CIFF Copenhagen, Terraforma Festival, Missoni, Nero Editions, Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Shenzhen Architecture Biennale, among others. They have led didactic activity at Faculté d’architecture de l’université libre de Bruxelles, Design Academy Eindhoven, Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and Politecnico di Milano. They taught at The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, NABA Nuova Accademia Belle Arti Milano, and since 2016 they have been regularly teaching at MADE Program-Accademia di Belle Arti R. Gagliardi in Syracuse, Italy.
