The essayistic portrait depicts the lives and loves of three protagonists of the "Neues Bauen" or "New Building" in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin in the context of the Bauhaus.

Thomas Elsaesser, film scholar and grandson to architect Martin Elsaesser, traces his family's life story in his movie "Die Sonneninsel". By doing that, he contrasts the relationship between his grandparents and landscape architect Leberecht Migge with two contrary notions of architecture: Martin Elsaesser's capitalist concept of growth as opposed to the first ideas for a "green" movement by Leberecht Migge.

Following the screening, a talk between the director and architecture critic Olaf Bartels will take place.
