Contemporary witness conversation in memory of the painting campaign 40 years ago on the Storkower pedestrian bridge
The over 500 meter long pedestrian bridge between the Lichtenberg residential area of Fennpfuhl and the Friedrichshain Samariterviertel was a place of discomfort and fear in the early 1980s: the side windows on the Friedrichshain side were closed with metal plates. Many called the neglected structure the Storkower Tunnel. On November 26, 1983, 20 young people painted the dark place with paint: animal motifs, human figures, trees and landscapes.
The Stasi investigated the case. The SED state imposed drastic fines. Seven people involved were sent to prison. Numerous young people showed solidarity with the campaign and raised the entire fine amount of over 30,000 GDR marks through illegal collections.
