Future and civil society in East Germany
For a long time, it was believed that the East lacked an understanding of democracy and that civil society was virtually nonexistent. And yet, this very civil society is now being tasked with solving current problems – and is often left to cope on its own.
Together with author Hendrik Bolz, the Berliner Ensemble is highlighting those who are committed to openness and democracy, thus offering insights into a society that is far from being as homogeneous as is often claimed. To this end, they alternate between inviting people to the Berliner Ensemble in Berlin-Mitte and visiting civil society organizations in the East.
In April, ahead of the state elections in the fall, Hendrik Bolz will meet with political scientist Hannah Beck, who, among other things, is involved with the "Thuringia Project" of the Verfassungsblog (Constitutional Law Blog) and the Society for Civil Rights, focusing on the resilience of the German constitution and the political situation in East Germany.
Hannah Katinka Beck studied political science, ethnology, and global politics in Leipzig and Malmö and has conducted two independent research projects examining the attitudes of AfD voters and the transnational network of the Identitarian Movement. She was a research assistant in the Thuringia project of the Verfassungsblog and is currently supporting the Society for Civil Rights as a project manager in the preparation of the expert report on the AfD.
