Europe is sealing itself off. Sea rescue is being criminalised, asylum rights are being eroded, deportations are being intensified – and this is no longer just happening under right-wing governments.

Even countries led or co-governed by social democrats are backing political decisions that deny access for those seeking protection. What does this mean for civilian sea rescue and for refugee aid in general? What scope for action remains when humanitarian work is increasingly being placed under pressure? How can resistance be organised? What political, civil society and even artistic responses are conceivable in this situation? And what future does the idea of Europe have when it abandons its humanitarian foundations?

To complement the Italian theatre collective Kepler-452’s documentary theatre piece »A place of safety«, which focuses on the humanitarian catastrophe in the Mediterranean, we are dedicating a panel discussion to all these pressing questions.
