The Weimar Republic, founded in 1919, was under pressure from the very beginning. Authoritarian ideas and nationalist thinking were deeply rooted in parts of society. Numerous democrats from politics and society, however, warned early on of the dangers posed by the republic's nationalist, antisemitic, right-wing extremist, and National Socialist opponents. They feared for fundamental rights and the social achievements of Germany's first parliamentary democracy.

Using 27 biographies of committed men and women, the exhibition exemplifies the struggle against National Socialism before 1933. It illuminates various fields of action, motivations, and forms of confrontation with the rising Nazi movement and makes it clear: The Weimar Republic was by no means a "democracy without democrats."

The exhibition will be on display from January 22, 2026, to August 23, 2026, in the special exhibition area on the first floor of the German Resistance Memorial Center.
