With Johanna Haug, scientific trainee, Fine Arts Collection
Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff (1923–2011) is one of the few German female sculptors and draughtswomen who achieved international success in the 1950s and 70s. As the only female sculptor and member of the group, she was a co-founder of ZEN 49.
Milestones of her success include invitations to documenta in Kassel in 1959 and 1964, and to the Venice Biennale in 1962. She received important art prizes and is featured in significant publications on sculpture after 1945. Nevertheless, she is often perceived today only as one half of the successful Berlin duo Matschinsky-Denninghoff.
This exhibition presents the first comprehensive evaluation of her estate. It comprises a wealth of previously unknown material, including sculptures, drawings, and documents relating to Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff. These offer a new perspective on the artist's early work.
