Thirteen texts and thirteen photographs encapsulate experiences from palliative care: intense moments of life, proximity to death and mortality, and artistic expressions of hope for what is to come.

In the face of death, life becomes more concentrated. Palliative care physician Marlies Reulecke repeatedly experiences touching moments of intense vitality in her work: sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad. In her texts, she recounts these moments and honors both the life and death of the people she accompanies. At the same time, her stories invite us to approach the topic of mortality and to meet it with openness and courage.

The artist Jens Reulecke responds to these texts with his art. His works explore the theme of transition, but direct our gaze beyond memory and transience to what is to come, to the still uncertain. What follows us posthumously appears here as an energetically charged space—as hope in the face of death.
