The exhibition project Wir Deutschen (We Germans) explores Black German perspectives, examining how identity is formed within the context of private life, family and societal influences.
Through photographic, installation and film works, Amon Aleme Selassie, Lily Roggemann and Michael Roggemann explore questions of representation and self-perception based on their own life stories. Selassie creates nostalgic cinematic images of childhood memories, while Lily Roggemann relates her mother Cornelia Roggemann-Heuer's biography in the GDR to the historical and political contexts of racism and the GDR's self-image as a state. This is complemented by archival photographs by Michael Roggemann.
The works are not intended as purely private narratives, but rather reveal personal experiences and family connections as part of broader societal realities. As part of Black History Month and sponsored by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, this biographical retrospective provides a starting point for contemporary discussions about belonging and identity formation.
The exhibition at Roam Projects e.V. (Lindenstraße 91) runs from 7 to 21 February 2026 and is accompanied by a supporting programme including a discussion with the participants at the closing event.
