Reading and discussion with Norbert Kron
This mother-son relationship has never been easy. As the mother grows older, it doesn't get any easier. And so what should be a matter of course in view of a badly dented car – that the almost blind mother finally hands over her car keys – turns into a skirmish full of feints. And it becomes a Herculean struggle when the son wants to get her to sign a power of attorney or even consider the help of a care service.
What begins as a family wrestling match, however, also brings with it existential insights – about love, death and family secrets: why Germany's complicated history made the mother, who was displaced from her homeland, who she is, and how lifelong struggles ultimately lead to reconciliation and happiness.
Norbert Kron, born in Munich in 1965, studied German and French literature and has lived in Berlin since 1992 as a television culture journalist and writer. He has interviewed numerous cultural figures and celebrities for programmes on ARD and ZDF.
