On Tuesday, 27 January 2026, the German Historical Museum is offering free admission to the Pei Building. In addition, museum visitors can enjoy a free guided tour programme on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

On 27 January 1945, the Red Army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration and extermination camp of the Nazi genocide. Since 1996, this date has been a national day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism in Germany, and since 2005, an international day of remembrance.

To mark this occasion, the DHM is offering a 60-minute themed tour of the exhibition ‘Roads not Taken. Or: It could have been different’: Using selected turning points and biographical approaches, the tour sheds light on the ‘civilisational rupture’ of the Nazi genocide. The focus is on the practice of persecution and its connection to the course of the war and Nazi ideology.

In the exhibition ‘Nature and German History. Faith – Biology – Power,’ the tour ‘The Nature of Violence: National Socialist Nature Ideology in the Context of German History’ explores the question of which images and narratives the Nazi regime used to construct and idealise a ‘German nature.’ How were ideas about nature politicised as part of an order characterised by violence, and what concrete measures were taken to implement these ideas? The 75-minute tour reconstructs central elements of Nazi nature ideology and embeds them in the context of German history. Using selected case studies such as the propaganda poster for the construction of the Reichsautobahn, depictions of the ‘German nation’ or the reception of Darwin's theory in the German national context, the tour addresses continuities and changes in nature-related patterns of interpretation and makes them visible.
